Status of Generosity
سخاوت کا مقام
وَقَدْ عُزِّيَ عَنْ عَدِيِّ بْنِ حَاتِم الطَّائِيِّ بِفَقْدِ بَنِيهِ: يَا عَدِيُّ، إِنْ صَبَرْتَ جَرَتْ عَلَيْكَ الْمَقَادِيرُ وَأَنْتَ مَأْجُورٌ، وَإِنْ جَزِعْتَ جَرَتْ عَلَيْكَ الْمَقَادِيرُ وَأَنْتَ مَأْزُورٌ.
حضرتؑ نے عدی ابن حاتم طائی کو ان کے بیٹوں کی وفات پر تعزیت دیتے ہوئے فرمایا: اے عدی! اگر تم نے صبر کیا تو تقدیر کے فیصلے تو بہرحال تم پر جاری ہوں گے مگر تم اجر پاؤ گے، اور اگر تم نے بے صبری (واویلا) کی تو بھی تقدیر کے فیصلے تو جاری ہو کر ہی رہیں گے مگر تم گناہگار ٹھہرو گے۔
“Imam Ali ؑ said to Adi b. Hatim at-Ta’i while consoling him on the death of his sons: O Adi, if you remain patient, the decrees of fate will take effect on you while you are rewarded; but if you show impatience, the decrees of fate will still take effect on you while you are burdened with sin.”
Reflections: This is a masterpiece of logic regarding destiny ($Taqdir$). Imam Ali ؑ explains that humans cannot change what has already been decreed by Allah. Loss is inevitable. However, we have full control over our **reaction**. Since the outcome (the loss) is the same in both cases, the wise person chooses patience to gain Divine reward, while the foolish person suffers the loss and loses the reward by complaining against God’s will.
