Miserliness, Cowardice and Poverty

الْبُخْلُ عَارٌ، وَالْجُبْنُ مَنْقَصَةٌ، وَالْفَقْرُ يُخْرِسُ الْفَطِينَ عَنْ حُجَّتِهِ، وَالْمُقِلُّ غَرِيبٌ فِي بَلْدَتِهِ.
Urdu Translation • اردو ترجمہ
بخل ننگ و عار ہے، اور بزدلی نقص و عیب ہے، اور غریبی و افلاس عقل مند انسان کی زبان کو اس کے دلائل پیش کرنے سے گونگا بنا دیتی ہے، اور مفلس اپنے شہر میں بھی پردیسی ہوتا ہے۔
English Translation • انگریزی ترجمہ
“Miserliness is a shame; cowardice is a defect; poverty renders a smart man tongue-tied in his argument; and a poor man is a stranger in his own town.”
Reflections: In this Hekmat, Imam Ali (as) connects social status with psychological states. He observes that poverty doesn’t just affect the pocket; it suppresses the voice and social belonging of even the most intelligent individuals.
