Dignity and Followers
وقار اور پیروکاری
وَقَدْ لَقِيَهُ عِنْدَ مَسِيرِهِ إِلَى الشَّامِ دَهَاقِينُ الْأَنْبَارِ، فَتَرَجَّلُوا لَهُ وَاشْتَدُّوا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: مَا هَذَا الَّذِي صَنَعْتُمُوهُ؟ قَالُوا: خُلُقٌ مِنَّا نُعَظِّمُ بِهِ أُمَرَاءَنَا. فَقَالَ: وَاللَّهِ مَا يَنْتَفِعُ بِهَذَا أُمَرَاؤُكُمْ! وَإِنَّكُمْ لَتَشُقُّونَ عَلَى أَنْفُسِكُمْ فِي دُنْيَاكُمْ، وَتَشْقَوْنَ بِهِ فِي آخِرَتِكُمْ.
آپؑ نے (ان لوگوں سے جو آپ کے آگے آگے دوڑ رہے تھے) فرمایا: یہ تم کیا کر رہے ہو؟ انہوں نے کہا کہ یہ ہماری ایک رسم ہے جس کے ذریعے ہم اپنے حکمرانوں کی تعظیم کرتے ہیں۔ آپؑ نے فرمایا: خدا کی قسم! اس سے تمہارے حکمرانوں کو تو کوئی فائدہ نہیں پہنچتا، البتہ تم دنیا میں اپنے آپ کو مشقت میں ڈالتے ہو اور آخرت میں اس کی وجہ سے بدبختی سمیٹتے ہو۔
“Imam Ali (as) said to those running before him: What is this that you are doing? They replied: It is a custom of ours by which we honor our leaders. He said: By Allah, your leaders do not benefit from this at all; you only distress yourselves in this world and earn misery for the next.”
Reflections: This saying captures the essence of Islamic equality. Imam Ali ؑ rejected the hollow rituals of servitude that were common in Persian and Roman courts. He teaches that such sycophancy (flattery) harms both parties: it subjects the followers to unnecessary physical and mental humiliation, and it risks corrupting the soul of the leader by feeding their arrogance.
