The Essence of Liberality
سخاوت کی حقیقت
السَّخَاءُ مَا كَانَ ابْتِدَاءً، فَأَمَّا مَا كَانَ عَنْ مَسْأَلَةٍ فَحَيَاءٌ وَتَذَمُّمٌ.
سخاوت وہ ہے جو بن مانگے ہو، اور جو مانگنے پر دی جائے وہ یا تو شرم ہے یا ملامت سے بچنا۔
“Generosity (liberality) is that which is initiated; as for that which is given upon request, it is either out of shame or to avoid reproach.”
Reflections: Imam Ali ؑ defines the highest tier of charity. True generosity is proactive; it happens when the giver senses a need and fulfills it before being asked, thereby preserving the dignity of the recipient. When a gift is given only after a request, it often lacks pure spiritual merit, as the giver may simply be acting out of the social pressure or the awkwardness of saying “no.”
