The Changing Tides
بدلتے ہوئے حالات
إِذَا أَقْبَلَتِ الدُّنْيَا عَلَى أَحَدٍ أَعَارَتْهُ مَحَاسِنَ غَيْرِهِ، وَإِذَا أَدْبَرَتْ عَنْهُ سَلَبَتْهُ مَحَاسِنَ نَفْسِهِ.
جب دنیا کسی کی طرف رخ کرتی ہے (خوش بخت بناتی ہے) تو دوسروں کی خوبیاں بھی اسے ادھار دے دیتی ہے، اور جب اس سے پیٹھ پھیر لیتی ہے تو خود اس کی اپنی خوبیاں بھی اس سے چھین لیتی ہے۔
“When the world favors someone, it attributes to him the virtues of others; and when it turns away from him, it strips him of his own virtues.”
Reflections: Imam Ali ؑ highlights the fickle nature of public perception and worldly success. When you are successful, people imagine virtues in you that you might not even possess. Conversely, when you fail, even your genuine talents and good traits are ignored or criticized. This wisdom is a reminder to value Internal Integrity over External Reputation, as the world’s praise and blame are often based on circumstances rather than true merit.
