The Definition of Islam
اسلام کی تعریف
لَأَنْسُبَنَّ الْإِسْلَامَ نِسْبَةً لَمْ يَنْسُبْهَا أَحَدٌ قَبْلِي: الْإِسْلَامُ هُوَ التَّسْلِيمُ، وَالتَّسْلِيمُ هُوَ الْيَقِينُ، وَالْيَقِينُ هُوَ التَّصْدِيقُ، وَالتَّصْدِيقُ هُوَ الْإِقْرَارُ، وَالْإِقْرَارُ هُوَ الْأَدَاءُ، وَالْأَدَاءُ هُوَ الْعَمَلُ.
میں اسلام کی ایسی تعریف کروں گا جو مجھ سے پہلے کسی نے نہیں کی: اسلام سرِ تسلیم خم کرنا ہے، اور تسلیم سراسر یقین ہے، اور یقین تصدیق ہے، اور تصدیق اقرار ہے، اور اقرار فرض کی بجا آوری ہے، اور بجا آوری عمل ہے۔
“I shall define Islam as no one has defined it before me: Islam is submission, submission is conviction, conviction is affirmation, affirmation is acknowledgement, acknowledgement is discharge (of obligations), and discharge is action.”
Reflections: Imam Ali ؑ breaks down faith into its essential DNA. He argues that you cannot claim to be a Muslim without **Submission** to God’s will. But submission is hollow without **Conviction** (internal certainty). Certainty must lead to **Affirmation** and **Acknowledgement** of the Truth. Finally, he arrives at the ultimate point: the goal of all these internal states is **Action**. In the Imam’s view, Islam is not a static identity; it is a dynamic life of purposeful work.
