Karbala: An Inspiration of Life
The New Islamic year 1436 has just set in, and Muslims have started greeting each other. There is no problem if we exchange greetings on a new year but ironically the new year starts with Moharram, the saddest month of Islamic Calendar.
نیا اسلامی سال 1436 شروع ہو چکا ہے اور مسلمانوں نے ایک دوسرے کو مبارکباد دینا شروع کر دی ہے۔ نئے سال پر مبارکباد کے تبادلے میں کوئی حرج نہیں، لیکن ستم ظریفی یہ ہے کہ نئے سال کا آغاز محرم سے ہوتا ہے، جو اسلامی کیلنڈر کا غمگین ترین مہینہ ہے۔
The month in which Imam Hussain (as) – the grandson of the holy Prophet (pbuh) was brutally martyred along with his family members on the 10th day of Moharram – Ashura. This event of Karbala and wishing a new year does not go well with certain sections of Muslim brethern.
وہ مہینہ جس میں نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے نواسے امام حسین علیہ السلام کو ان کے اہل خانہ کے ہمراہ 10 محرم – عاشورہ کے دن بے دردی سے شہید کر دیا گیا۔ کربلا کا یہ واقعہ اور نئے سال کی مبارکباد بعض مسلمان بھائیوں کے نزدیک مناسب نہیں معلوم ہوتی۔
In order to understand their point of view let us try to understand the event of Karbala and its importance in our lives. Ashura, the 10th of Moharram has a great historical significance as mentioned in Sahih-e-Muslim.
ان کے نقطہ نظر کو سمجھنے کے لیے آئیے ہم واقعہ کربلا اور ہماری زندگی میں اس کی اہمیت کو سمجھنے کی کوشش کریں۔ عاشورہ، یعنی 10 محرم، ایک عظیم تاریخی اہمیت رکھتا ہے جیسا کہ صحیح مسلم میں ذکر کیا گیا ہے۔
Quranic Insight (Burhanul Quran)
وَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَمْوَاتًا ۚ بَلْ أَحْيَاءٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ
تفسیر برہان القرآن: کربلا کا واقعہ محض ایک جنگ نہیں بلکہ بقائے اسلام کا معرکہ ہے۔ امام حسینؑ نے اپنی عظیم قربانی سے ثابت کیا کہ حق کو مٹایا نہیں جا سکتا۔ صحیح مسلم کی روایات کے مطابق اس دن کی تاریخی اہمیت مسلمہ ہے، لیکن سید الشہداء کی قربانی نے اس دن کو حریت اور آزادی کا استعارہ بنا دیا۔
On this day the repentance of Adam (as) was accepted by Allah (SWT); The ark carrying Nuh (as) and his companions was saved; Allah extinguished the fire in which Ibrahim (as) was thrown by Nimrod.
اس دن حضرت آدم علیہ السلام کی توبہ اللہ کی بارگاہ میں قبول ہوئی؛ حضرت نوح علیہ السلام اور ان کے ساتھیوں کی کشتی کو نجات ملی؛ اللہ تعالیٰ نے اس آگ کو ٹھنڈا کیا جس میں نمرود نے حضرت ابراہیم علیہ السلام کو پھینکا تھا۔
On the 10th of Moharram Ayub (as) got relief from his illness of 18 years; Musa (as) received the Commandments. Yusuf (as) was re-united with his father Yaqub (as). Yunus (as) was out from the belly of the fish.
10 محرم کو حضرت ایوب علیہ السلام کو 18 سالہ بیماری سے شفا ملی؛ حضرت موسیٰ علیہ السلام کو احکامات الٰہی موصول ہوئے۔ حضرت یوسف علیہ السلام اپنے والد حضرت یعقوب علیہ السلام سے دوبارہ ملے۔ حضرت یونس علیہ السلام مچھلی کے پیٹ سے باہر آئے۔
On this day the river Nile was divided and its water drowned Pharaoh along with his army. Isa (as) was raised to the sky and Sulaiman (A.S)’s kingdom was restored.
اسی دن دریائے نیل تقسیم ہوا اور اس کے پانی نے فرعون کو اس کے لشکر سمیت غرق کر دیا۔ حضرت عیسیٰ علیہ السلام کو آسمان پر اٹھایا گیا اور حضرت سلیمان علیہ السلام کی سلطنت بحال ہوئی۔
In the light of the above incidences one tends to wonder that why such atrocities was afflicted upon Imam Hussain (as) on this day when Allah chose to relieve most of His chosen Prophets from their individual atrocities and hardships. But looking at the condition of Islam we realize that the hardship was on Islam and not on any individual.
مذکورہ بالا واقعات کی روشنی میں انسان یہ سوچنے پر مجبور ہو جاتا ہے کہ جب اللہ نے اپنے منتخب انبیاء کو انفرادی مصائب سے نجات دینے کے لیے اس دن کو چنا، تو پھر اسی دن امام حسینؑ پر اتنے مظالم کیوں ڈھائے گئے؟ لیکن جب ہم اسلام کی اس وقت کی حالت دیکھتے ہیں، تو اندازہ ہوتا ہے کہ وہ تکلیف کسی فرد پر نہیں بلکہ خود اسلام پر تھی۔
The tyrant Yazid had claimed for Caliphate and it was the resistance of Imam Hussain (as) that saved Islam from the clutches of Banu Ummaiya and tyrants like Yazid. So while Allah (SWT) helped His Prophets and saved them from their hardships, it was Imam Hussain (as)’s selfless sacrifice that saved Islam and helped the cause of the Almighty Allah.
ظالم یزید نے خلافت کا دعویٰ کیا تھا اور وہ امام حسینؑ کی مزاحمت ہی تھی جس نے اسلام کو بنو امیہ کے چنگل اور یزید جیسے ظالموں سے بچایا۔ چنانچہ جہاں اللہ تعالیٰ نے اپنے انبیاء کی مدد فرمائی اور انہیں تکالیف سے نجات دی، وہیں امام حسینؑ کی بے لوث قربانی نے اسلام کو بچایا اور اللہ تعالیٰ کے مقصد کی تکمیل فرمائی۔
This makes it important for every Muslim to remember the selfless sacrifice of the grandson of our beloved Prophet (pbuh) and strive to follow the path shown by him.
یہی وجہ ہے کہ ہر مسلمان کے لیے ضروری ہے کہ وہ ہمارے پیارے نبی ﷺ کے نواسے کی اس بے لوث قربانی کو یاد رکھے اور ان کے دکھائے ہوئے راستے پر چلنے کی کوشش کرے۔
The lovers of Imam Hussain (as) irrespective of any religion, caste or sect mourn and weep and remember his sacrifice by organizing gatherings like Majlis for 10 days. This is done to reinforce their love for him and to express their solidarity with the Imam (as) to the world that they are true followers of Imam Hussain (as) and they have shunned the ideology of tyrant like Yazid.
امام حسینؑ کے چاہنے والے خواہ ان کا تعلق کسی بھی مذہب، ذات یا فرقے سے ہو، گریہ و زاری کرتے ہیں اور 10 دن تک مجالس کا انعقاد کر کے ان کی قربانی کو یاد کرتے ہیں۔ یہ عمل ان کے ساتھ اپنی محبت کو پختہ کرنے اور دنیا کو یہ بتانے کے لیے ہے کہ وہ امام حسینؑ کے سچے پیروکار ہیں اور انہوں نے یزید جیسے ظالم کے نظریے کو مسترد کر دیا ہے۔
They stand for truth, justice, Kindness, tolerance, co-existence, patience and above all love for humanity.
وہ سچائی، انصاف، مہربانی، رواداری، بقائے باہمی، صبر اور سب سے بڑھ کر انسانیت کے لیے محبت کے علمبردار ہیں۔
There are prophetic traditions that confirm that mourning and crying on the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (as) is natural and there is no biddat as we are made to understand by some section. I am mentioning the few:
ایسی نبوی احادیث موجود ہیں جو اس بات کی تصدیق کرتی ہیں کہ امام حسینؑ کی شہادت پر ماتم کرنا اور رونا ایک فطری امر ہے اور یہ کوئی بدعت نہیں ہے، جیسا کہ کچھ حلقوں کی جانب سے باور کرایا جاتا ہے۔ میں چند کا ذکر کر رہا ہوں:
The Prophet said: “Just now Gabriel has left me. He has forewarned me that Hussain would be slaughtered in Karbala, and he asked me, ‘Would you like to smell the dust of that place?’ When I replied in the affirmative, he extended his hand and handed it over to me. At this I burst into tears.” – (Ref: Selections from Kanz ul Ammal, p 111)
Salami Records: “I paid a visit to the Prophet’s wife Umme Salma and saw her crying with grief. When I asked her what made her weep she said, I just dreamt that the Prophet had come with his beard and head covered with dust. When I asked him what had made him so full of grief, he told me that he had just returned after seeing his Hussain butchered.” – (Ref: Jama Tirmizee P 466, Mishkat Vol., 8, P. 139., Mustadrak Vol 4, P 19)

The tragedy of Karbala gives us true lessons of life and it is a great inspiration to many thinkers and philosophers. I hope as a new year resolution if we all try to learn the way these people have been inspired and strive to make this world a peaceful place we might become an inspiration for the coming generations. And it would make more sense than mere exchange of greetings.
سانحہ کربلا ہمیں زندگی کا حقیقی سبق دیتا ہے اور یہ بہت سے مفکرین اور فلسفیوں کے لیے تحریک کا باعث ہے۔ مجھے امید ہے کہ نئے سال کے عزم کے طور پر، اگر ہم سب ان لوگوں سے سیکھنے کی کوشش کریں جو اس واقعے سے متاثر ہوئے ہیں اور اس دنیا کو ایک پرامن جگہ بنانے کی جدوجہد کریں، تو ہم آنے والی نسلوں کے لیے ایک مثال بن سکتے ہیں۔ یہ محض مبارکبادوں کے تبادلے سے کہیں زیادہ بامعنی ہوگا۔
