About This Supplication
Dua al-Nudba (The Supplication of Lamentation) is a powerful invocation recited on Fridays and the four Eid days. The word "Nudba" means to weep, cry, or lament. This dua is deeply moving and eloquent, expressing profound spiritual longing and hope for the reappearance of the Twelfth Imam, Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi (may Allah hasten his return). It is a supplication that builds a spiritual connection with the Imam and calls for justice, truth, and the establishment of divine order on earth.

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ
al-hamdu lillahi rabbi al-alamina
All praise be to Allah the Lord of the worlds.
وَصَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيِّهِ
wa salla allahu ala sayyidina muhammadin nabiyyihi
May Allah send blessings upon our master Muhammad His Prophet
وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَسْلِيماً
wa alihi wa sallama tasliman
and upon his Household and may He salute them with thorough salutation.

اَللَّهُمَّ لَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ عَلَىٰ مَا جَرَىٰ بِهِ قَضَاؤُكَ
allahumma laka al-hamdu ala ma jara bihi qada'uka
O Allah, all praise be to You for Your decree that has been applied
فِي اوْلِيَائِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱسْتَخْلَصْتَهُمْ لِنَفْسِكَ وَدِينِكَ
fi awliya'ika alladhina istakhlastahum linafsika wa dinika
to Your vicegerents whom You have purely selected for Yourself and Your religion;
إِِذِ ٱخْتَرْتَ لَهُمْ جَزِيلَ مَا عِنْدَكَ مِنَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ ٱلْمُقِيمِ
idhi ikhtarta lahum jazila ma indaka min al-na'imi al-muqimi
as You have chosen for them the abundance of what You have in possession, that is the enduring pleasure
ٱلَّذِي لاََ زَوَالَ لَهُ وَلاَ ٱضْمِحْلاَلَ
alladhi la zawala lahu wa la idmihlala
that neither vanishes nor diminishes,
❧ ✦ ❧
فَبَعْضٌ اسْكَنْتَهُ جَنَّتَكَ إِلَىٰ انْ اخْرَجْتَهُ مِنْهَا
faba'dun askantahu jannataka ila an akhrajtahu minha
Therefore, You made some of them dwell in Your Garden until You decided to take him out of there.
وَبَعْضٌ حَمَلْتَهُ فِي فُلْكِكَ وَنَجَّيْتَهُ وَمَنْ آمَنَ مَعَهُ
wa ba'dun hamaltahu fi fulkika wa najjaytahu wa man amana ma'ahu
You bore another one in Your Ark and saved him and those who believed with him
مِنَ ٱلْهَلَكَةِ بِرَحْمَتِكَ
min al-halakati birahmatika
from perdition, out of Your mercy.

The Lamentation: Where is the Imam?
فَعَلَىٰ ٱلاطَائِبِ مِنْ اهْلِ بَيْتِ مُحَمَّد وَعَلِيٍّ صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمَا وَآلِهِمَا
fa'ala al-ata'ibi min ahli bayti muhammadin wa aliyyin salla allahu alayhima wa alihima
For the immaculate ones from the household of Muhammad and 'Ali, may Allah bless both of them and their household,
فَلْيَبْكِ ٱلْبَاكُونَ وَإِِيَّاهُمْ فَلْيَنْدُبِ ٱلنَّادِبُونَ
falyabki al-bakuna wa iyyahum falyandub al-nadibuna
let weepers weep. For them too, let lamenters lament.
وَلِمِثْلِهِمْ فَلْتَذْرِفِ ٱلدُّمُوعُ وَلْيَصْرُخِ ٱلصَّارِخُونَ
wa limithlihim faltadhrif al-dumu'u walyasrukh al-sarikhuna
For the like of them, let tears be shed, screamers scream,

The heart-wrenching questions of lamentation begin...
ايْنَ ٱلْحَسَنُ ايْنَ ٱلْحُسَيْنُ ايْنَ ابْنَاءُ ٱلْحُسَيْنِ
ayna al-hasanu ayna al-husaynu ayna abna'u al-husayni
Where is al-Hasan? Where is al-Husayn? Where are the sons of al-Husayn;
صَالِحٌ بَعْدَ صَالِحٍ وَصَادِقٌ بَعْدَ صَادِقٍ
salihun ba'da salihin wa sadiqun ba'da sadiqin
a virtuous one after another, and a veracious one after another?
ايْنَ ٱلسَّبِيلُ بَعْدَ ٱلسَّبِيلِ ايْنَ ٱلْخِيَرَةُ بَعْدَ ٱلْخِيَرَةِ
ayna al-sabilu ba'da al-sabili ayna al-khiyaratu ba'da al-khiyarati
Where is the course (to Allah) after a course? Where is the best after the best?
ايْنَ ٱلشُّمُوسُ ٱلطَّالِعَةُ ايْنَ ٱلاقْمَارُ ٱلْمُنِيرَةُ
ayna al-shumusu al-tali'atu ayna al-aqmaru al-muniratu
Where are the rising suns? Where are the shining moons?
ايْنَ ٱلانْجُمُ ٱلزَّاهِرَةُ ايْنَ اعْلاَمُ ٱلدِّينِ وَقَوَاعِدُ ٱلْعِلْمِ
ayna al-anjumu al-zahiratu ayna a'lamu al-dini wa qawa'idu al-ilmi
Where are the brilliant stars? Where are the authorities of the religion and the foundations of knowledge?
❧ ✦ ❧
ايْنَ بَقِيَّةُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِي لاََ تَخْلُو مِنَ ٱلْعِتْرَةِ ٱلْهَادِيةِ
ayna baqiyyatu allahi allati la takhlu min al-itrati al-hadiyati
Where is the left by Allah that is always represented by individuals from the guiding (Prophetic) offspring?
اينَ ٱلْمُعَدُّ لِقَطْعِ دَابِرِ ٱلظَّلَمَةِ
ayna al-mu'addu liqat'i dabiri al-zalamati
Where is the one prepared for cutting off the roots of the wrongdoers?
ايْنَ ٱلْمُنْتَظَرُ لإِِِقَامَةِ ٱلامْتِ وَٱلعِوَجِ
ayna al-muntazaru li'iqamati al-amti wal-iwaji
Where is the one awaited for mending every unevenness and crookedness?
ايْنَ ٱلْمُرْتَجىٰ لإِِزَالَةِ ٱلْجَوْرِ وَٱلْعُدْوَانِ
ayna al-murtaja li'izalati al-jawri wal-udwani
Where is the one hoped for removing oppression and aggression?
ايْنَ ٱلْمُدَّخَرُ لِتَجْدِيدِ ٱلْفَرَائِضِ وَٱلسُّنَنِ
ayna al-muddakharu litajdidi al-fara'idi wa al-sunani
Where is the one spared for refreshing the duties and traditions?
❧ ✦ ❧
ايْنَ ٱلْمُتَخَيَّرُ لإِِِعَادَةِ ٱلْمِلَّةِ وَٱلشَّرِيعَةِ
ayna al-mutakhayyaru li'i'adati al-millati wa al-shari'ati
Where is the one chosen for restoring the faith and the code of law?
ايْنَ ٱلْمُؤَمَّلُ لإِِِحْيَاءِ ٱلْكِتَابِ وَحُدُودِهِ
ayna al-mu'ammalu li'ihya'i al-kitabi wa hududihi
Where is the one expected to restore to life the Book and its provisions?
ايْنَ مُحْيِي مَعَالِمِ ٱلدِّينِ وَاهْلِهِ
ayna muhyi ma'alimi al-dini wa ahlihi
Where is the reviver of the elements of the religion and its people?
❧ ✦ ❧
ايْنَ قَاصِمُ شَوْكَةِ ٱلْمُعْتَدِينَ
ayna qasimu shawkati al-mu'tadina
Where is the one shattering the arms of the aggressors?
ايْنَ هَادِمُ ابْنِيَةِ ٱلشِّرْكِ وَٱلنِّفَاقِ
ayna hadimu abniyati al-shirki wa al-nifaqi
Where is the one demolishing the edifices of polytheism and hypocrisy?
ايْنَ مُبِيدُ اهْلِ ٱلْفُسُوقِ وَٱلْعِصْيَانِ وَٱلطُّغْيَانِ
ayna mubidu ahli al-fusuqi wa al-isyani wa al-tughyani
Where is the one annihilating the people of wickedness, disobedience, and tyranny?
❧ ✦ ❧
ايْنَ مُعِزُّ ٱلاوْلِيَاءِ وَمُذِلُّ ٱلاعْدَاءِ
ayna mu'izzu al-awliya'i wa mudhillu al-a'da'i
Where is the one ennobling the saints and humiliating the enemies?
ايْنَ جَامِعُ ٱلْكَلِمَةِ عَلَىٰ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ
ayna jami'u al-kalimati ala al-taqwa
Where is the one bringing together (all scattered) words to piety?
ايْنَ بَابُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِي مِنْهُ يُؤْتَىٰ
ayna babu allahi alladhi minhu yu'ta
Where is the door of Allah from which Allah is come?
ايْنَ وَجْهُ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِي إِِلَيْهِ يَتَوَجَّهُ ٱلاوْلِيَاءُ
ayna wajhu allahi alladhi ilayhi yatawajjahu al-awliya'u
Where is the Face of Allah towards whom the saints turn their faces.
❧ ✦ ❧
بِابِي انْتَ وَامِّي وَنَفْسِي لَكَ ٱلْوِقَاءُ وَٱلْحِمَىٰ
bi'abi anta wa ummi wa nafsi laka al-wiqa'u wa al-hima
May my father and mother be ransoms for you. May my soul be protection and shield for you.
يَا بْنَ ٱلسَّادَةِ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ يَا بْنَ ٱلنُّجَبَاءِ ٱلاكْرَمِينَ
yabna al-sadati al-muqarrabina yabna al-nujaba'i al-akramina
O son of the chiefs drawn near! O son of the most honorable, outstanding ones!
يَا بْنَ ٱلْهُدَاةِ ٱلْمَهْدِيِّينَ يَا بْنَ ٱلْخِيَرَةِ ٱلْمُهَذَّبِينَ
yabna al-hudati al-mahdiyyina yabna al-khiyarati al-muhadhdhabina
O son of the guiding and well-guided ones! O son of the ever-best refined ones!
❧ ✦ ❧
اَللَّهُمَّ وَاقِمْ بِهِ ٱلْحَقَّ وَادْحِضْ بِهِ ٱلْبَاطِلَ
allahumma wa aqim bihi al-haqqa wa adhid bihi al-batila
O Allah! Through him, establish all rights, refute the entire wrong,
وَادِلْ بِهِ اوْلِيَاءَكَ وَاذْلِلْ بِهِ اعْدَاءَكَ
wa adil bihi awliya'aka wa adhlil bihi a'da'aka
grant triumph to Your loyalists, humiliate Your enemies,
وَصِلِ ٱللَّهُمَّ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُ وُصْلَةً تُؤَدِّي إِلَىٰ مُرَافَقَةِ سَلَفِهِ
wa sil allahumma baynana wa baynahu wuslatan tu'addi ila murafaqati salafihi
establish, O Allah, between him and us a connection that leads us to accompany his ancestors,
وَاعِنَّا عَلَىٰ تَادِيَةِ حُقُوقِهِ إِِلَيْهِ وَٱلِٱجْتِهَادِ فِي طَاعَتِهِ
wa a'inna ala ta'diyati huquqihi ilayhi wa al-ijtihadi fi ta'atihi
help us fulfill our duties towards him, exert all efforts in obedience to him
وَاجْتِنَابِ مَعْصِيَتِهِ وَٱمْنُنْ عَلَيْنَا بِرِضَاهُ
wa ajtinabi ma'siyatihi wa amnun alayna biridahu
and avoiding disobeying him, bestow upon us with the favor of attaining his pleasure,
❧ ✦ ❧
وَاجْعَلْ صَلاَتَنَا بِهِ مَقبُولَةً وَذُنُوبَنَا بِهِ مَغْفُورَةً
waj'al salatana bihi maqbulatan wa dhunubana bihi maghfuratan
And, through him, render our prayers admitted, our sins forgiven,
وَدُعَاءَنَا بِهِ مُسْتَجَاباً
wa du'a'ana bihi mustajaban
and our supplications responded.
وَاجْعَلْ ارْزَاقَنَا بِهِ مَبْسُوطَةً وَهُمُومَنَا بِهِ مَكْفِيَّةً
waj'al arzaqana bihi mabsutatan wa humumana bihi makfiyyatan
And, through him too, make our sustenance expanded for us, our distresses relieved,
وَحَوَائِجَنَا بِهِ مَقْضِيَّةً
wa hawa'ijana bihi maqdiyyatan
and our needs granted.
❧ ✦ ❧
وَاقْبِلْ إِِلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِكَ ٱلْكَرِيـمِ وَٱقْبَلْ تَقَرُّبَنَا إِِلَيْكَ
wa aqbil ilayna biwajhika al-karimi wa aqbal taqarrubana ilayka
And (please) receive us with Your Noble Face, approve of our seeking nearness to You,
وَٱنْظُرْ إِِلَيْنَا نَظْرَةً رَحِيمَةً نَسْتَكْمِلُ بِهَا ٱلْكَرَامَةَ عِنْدَكَ
wa anzur ilayna nazratan rahimatan nastakmilu biha al-karamata indaka
and have a merciful look at us by which we will win perfect honor with You;
ثُمَّ لاََ تَصْرِفْهَا عَنَّا بِجُودِكَ
thumma la tasrifha anna bijudika
and, after that, do not ever take it away from us, in the name of Your magnanimity,
وَٱسْقِنَا مِنْ حَوْضِ جَدِّهِ صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ بِكَاسِهِ وَبِيَدِهِ
wa saqina min hawdi jaddihi salla allahu alayhi wa alihi bika'sihi wa biyadihi
and give us a drink from the Pond of his grandfather, may Allah bless him and his Household, from his own cup and with his own hand,
رَيّاً رَوِيّاً هَنِيئاً سَائِغاً لاََ ظَمَا بَعْدَهُ
rayyan rawiyyan hani'an sa'ighan la zama'a ba'dahu
such a replete, satiating, pleasant, and wholesome drink after which we shall never suffer from thirst.

يَا أَرْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ
O most merciful of all those who show mercy!
